Safari Overview
The 3 days Rwanda gorilla trekking safari is an adventurous itinerary taking you to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri. Trek with the rare mountain gorillas in the wild and embark on a city tour in Kigali. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes Park involves exploring anyone of the 12 habituated families with an experienced guide.
Volcanoes National Park is 160sq.km dominated bamboo and Rainforest Park, located in Northwestern Rwanda. This park lies within the Virunga Conservation Area, a destination with diversity of faunal, avifaunal and floral species. Within Volcanoes N/Park, there are varied wildlife including gorillas, giant forest hogs, forest elephants, duikers, bush bucks, and 200 species of birds.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up, Kigali city tour & travel to Volcanoes NP
Early in the morning after you have enjoyed breakfast, you will have briefing from your tour leader and then set off to Volcanoes National Park. First, you will enjoy a city tour in Kigali and this includes a visit to the Gisozi genocide memorial with an expert. Begin your road trip to the Northwest in a 4WD Vehicle and drive time from Kigali capital to this park takes between 2 and 3 hours.
Day 2: Volcanoes NP gorilla trekking adventure & a cultural tour
After breakfast, you will be transferred up to Kinigi where you will meet Volcanoes NP tourism warden for briefing about gorilla trekking regulations. It will be during this session when the officials will also assign gorilla groups to visitors and actual trek commences at 8:00am. The park guides will be present in each group of 8 visitors on a journey to visit a gorilla family and the day trek runs for 2-6 hours.
After a long day of navigating through valleys, forest and hills then when you get a family of gorillas, a maximum of one hour will be available for you to enjoy up close and personal with gorillas. With the park guide, explore in depth about the daily behaviors of gorillas, watch the body gestures and maximize this period to take photos then you will be escorted back to the lodge.
After a relaxed moment at the lodge, you will pay a visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village to experience the best of Rwanda cultures and traditions.
Day 3: Departure
Get up early morning and have a hot cup of tea/coffee, and then you will check out of the lodge ready to start driving back to Kigali. Arrive at Kigali city early, do some shopping and later, transfer to Kigali Airport about 13km off from the heart of the city. Catch up with departure flight back home and today brings to an end the 3-day gorilla safari in Rwanda.
